Cuyabeno - Part I

Nature, wildlife and indigenous communities in the Amazon of Ecuador.

Cuyabeno is located in the north east of Ecuador, close to the borders of Colombia and Peru. During my time in Ecuador I had the chance to travel to Cuyabeno for a total of 5 days.

Our way into the jungle

To get to the Green Forest Lodge, in the middle of the jungle, we took a minivan from Nueva Loja to “Puente Cuyabeno”, from where we started our tour into the jungle by a small boat on the river Rio Cuyabeno. The boat tour itself was already an incredible experience. Normaly the boat ride takes about 2-3 h. But, as we were two ambitious photographers on the boat, it took us almost 5 h to reach our lodge. There were already so many animals to see on the way. And when I say many, I mean loads and loads. But check out for yourself:

  • Birds, more birds and even more birds

  • Anacondas

  • 5 different kinds of monkeys

  • Highlight: a sloth, that was kicked down a tree by a group of passing monkeys
